Friday Breakfast Club visits Ledston Luck nature reserve this week after starting the day with a bacon butty. Listen to some wonderful birdsong from resident and migrant birds. Our target birds will be willow warbler, blackcap, corn bunting and yellowhammer. Price £15 per person including refreshments. Transport Transport is available leaving at 8:00am from the Moor Allerton Centre on the Leeds outer ring road. Otherwise meet for optional breakfast at 9am or at the cafe at 9:45am by arrangement for a lift to the reserve. What to expect Easy walking on made up paths. Be prepared for muddy ground. There is a short, steep hill on the reserve. Toilets are available at the cafe and nearby RSPB Fairburn Ings visitor centre a short drive away, but there are plenty of ‘natural’ facilities. Note for beginners If you’re struggling to see birds through your binoculars, you’ll learn quickly how to use them with speed and accuracy and discover some useful techniques for watching birds in the field. You’ll also learn how to identify birds by their songs and calls. Please don’t buy binoculars especially for the trip as these can be provided on request. You’ll be able to get advice about binoculars, what to buy and the best places to make a purchase. What to wear May can be difficult to assess in terms of temperature so bring plenty of layers and waterproof clothing. Please don’t wear jeans as they will wick moisture from low growing vegetation. Bring a waterproof coat, over-trousers and sturdy, waterproof boots. Scarf, gloves, hat and sunscreen may be needed and it’s a good idea to carry insect repellent. Join me on more trips and learn about each bird’s story whether it migrates or stays in the UK the time of year when it can be seen the types of habitats preferred by different species how birds adapt to their environment.
