A late summer visit to Oakhill Nature Reserve in Goole will hopefully give us the opportunity to check the pools and hedgerows on the east of the reserve for dragonflies and butterflies. RSPB Blacktoft Sands is the perfect place to find migrating wading birds on the reedbed edge. We’ll look for spotted redshank, avocet, green and wood sandpiper, snipe and dunlin. Other birds will include marsh harrier, tree sparrow and bearded tit. Please note that the end time is the expected time for ending the class – add travel time to this. What to expect Easy walking on flat ground but paths will be muddy in places. There are no hides or facilities at Oakhill but toilets are available at Blacktoft and there are a lot of hides, most of which are close together. There is also a small visitor centre at Blacktoft but no cafe. Note for beginners If you’re struggling to see birds through your binoculars, you’ll learn quickly how to use them with speed and accuracy and discover some useful techniques for watching birds in the field. You’ll also learn how to identify birds by their songs and calls.Please don’t buy binoculars especially for the trip as these can be provided on request. You’ll be able to get advice about binoculars, what to buy and the best places to make a purchase. What to wear Bring layers in case of bad weather and waterproof outer clothing including coat, over-trousers and sturdy waterproof boots. Please don’t wear jeans as they will wick moisture from low growing vegetation. Bring a scarf and gloves for bad weather as well as water, sunscreen and insect repellent.
