This is my first late summer visit to Barden Moor. August is a special time in the valley leading up to Barden Scale as it is a well known migration route for birds. We’ll look for red grouse, stonechat, ring ouzel, snipe, lapwing and curlew. If there is time we’ll nip onto the Bolton Abbey estate at Barden Bridge. Price £30 per person including refreshments (Packed lunch required). Transport available Meet me at 08:00 at the Moor Allerton Centre on the Leeds outer ring road if you’d like transport to the venue. What to expect Easy walking on flat ground but paths will be muddy in places at Bolton Abbey. Barden Scale paths are rocky and on a slight incline. Toilets are available at Bolton Abbey. Note for beginners If you’re struggling to see birds through your binoculars, you’ll learn quickly how to use them with speed and accuracy and discover some useful techniques for watching birds in the field. You’ll also learn how to identify birds by their songs and calls.Please don’t buy binoculars especially for the trip as these can be provided on request. You’ll be able to get advice about binoculars, what to buy and the best places to make a purchase. What to wear You may need to wear base layers (thermal vests and leggings) depending on the weather. Bring a fleece and walking trousers. Please don’t wear jeans as they will wick moisture from low growing vegetation. Bring a waterproof coat, over-trousers and sturdy, waterproof boots, scarf, gloves, hat, sunscreen, insect repellent and plenty of water.
