I always look forward to my annual visit to beautiful Bolton Abbey with its dramatic views of the River Wharfe. Here we will look for pied and spotted flycatcher, redstart and wood warbler in the woodland and common sandpiper, kingfisher, grey wagtail, dipper and goosander on the river. We’ll then head onto Barden Moor to look for breeding waders, stonechat, cuckoo and wheatear. Not to be missed! Price £55 per person including refreshments (Packed lunch required). What to expect Easy walking on flat ground but paths will be muddy in places at Bolton Abbey. Barden Scale paths are rocky and on a slight incline. Toilets are available at Bolton Abbey. Note for beginners If you’re struggling to see birds through your binoculars, you’ll learn quickly how to use them with speed and accuracy and discover some useful techniques for watching birds in the field. You’ll also learn how to identify birds by their songs and calls.Please don’t buy binoculars especially for the trip as these can be provided on request. You’ll be able to get advice about binoculars, what to buy and the best places to make a purchase. What to wear You may need to wear base layers (thermal vests and leggings) depending on the weather. Bring a fleece and walking trousers. Please don’t wear jeans as they will wick moisture from low growing vegetation. Bring a waterproof coat, over-trousers and sturdy, waterproof boots, scarf, gloves, hat, sunscreen, insect repellent and plenty of water.
