The autumn and winter months are a good time to start learning bird songs and calls. We’ll differentiate between robin and wren songs and listen for siskin, redwing, great tit, mistle thrush and song thrush in the woodland. If the weather is favourable we may be able to hear goldcrest calling and we’ll also be looking out for nuthatch, great spotted woodpecker and treecreeper. The surrounding habitat includes farmland and a fishing pond to add some species to our list. Please note the later start than the usual Tuesday class. Price £15 per person including refreshments. Note for beginners If you’re struggling to see birds through your binoculars, you’ll learn quickly how to use them with speed and accuracy and discover some useful techniques for watching birds in the field. You’ll also learn how to identify birds by their songs and calls.Please don’t buy binoculars especially for the trip as these can be provided on request. You’ll be able to get advice about binoculars, what to buy and the best places to make a purchase. What to wear Wear plenty of layers and waterproof outer clothing including over-trousers and sturdy boots. No jeans please as they will wick moisture from low growing vegetation. Scarf, gloves and hat will be needed and it’s a good idea to carry spare socks and gloves.
