Bird song at Eccup Whin It’s a while since I offered a bird song trip to this little nature area close to the more well known Golden Acre Park. Eccup Whin is a fantastic mixture of woodland and scrub adjacent to farmland so there’s plenty of scope for learning the songs of resident and migrant birds. Listen for yellowhammer, reed bunting, willow tit, blackcap, garden warbler, common and lesser whitethroat, chiffchaff and willow warbler. Price: £15 per person including refreshments. Transport Transport is available by arrangement from the Moor Allerton Centre on the Leeds outer ring road from 08:30. What to expect Flat, uneven ground with boggy areas. Only ‘natural’ facilities in the woodland but there are toilets in nearby Golden Acre Park. Note for beginners If you’re struggling to see birds through your binoculars, you’ll learn quickly how to use them with speed and accuracy and discover some useful techniques for watching birds in the field. You’ll also learn how to identify birds by their songs and calls.Please don’t buy binoculars especially for the trip as these can be provided on request. You’ll be able to get advice about binoculars, what to buy and the best places to make a purchase. What to wear Bring plenty of layers in case of cold weather. Please don’t wear jeans as they will wick moisture from low growing vegetation. Bring a waterproof coat, over-trousers and sturdy, waterproof boots. You may also need a scarf, gloves, hat, sun screen and insect repellent.
