Engine Fields is a little known nature reserve in Yeadon tucked behind the Westfield industrial estate on Kirk Lane. In this 2 hour birdwatching session we’ll explore the paths and woodland around Old Dog Mill pond and take a stroll along the old railway line to look for kingfisher and listen to songs from goldcrest and spring migrants such as blackcap, willow warbler and chiffchaff. What to expect Easy walking on flat ground but paths will be muddy in places. There are no facilities at the reserve but toilets can be found at nearby Morrison’s in Yeadon. Note for beginners If you’re struggling to see birds through your binoculars, you’ll learn quickly how to use them with speed and accuracy and discover some useful techniques for watching birds in the field. You’ll also learn how to identify birds by their songs and calls.Please don’t buy binoculars especially for the trip as these can be provided on request. What to wear Manage your temperature in spring by bringing plenty of layers. Please don’t wear jeans as they will wick moisture from low growing vegetation. Bring a waterproof coat, over-trousers and sturdy, waterproof boots. Scarf, gloves and hat are essential and it’s a good idea to carry sunscreen and insect repellent.
