Bird song at Kirkstall Valley Nature Reserve Tucked away between Kirkstall Road, the River Aire, the railway line and the Leeds and Liverpool Canal is the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust’s Kirkstall Valley Nature Reserve. This linear site provides a sheltered spot for birds such as bullfinch, chiffchaff, willow warbler and goldcrest and the river and weirs are home to grey wagtail, kingfisher and dipper. Price: £15 per person including refreshments. Transport No transport available on this trip. Meet in the layby on Redcote Lane off Kirkstall Road at 18:45pm What to expect Some uneven ground and muddy paths but most of the paths are easy going. Only natural facilities available but there are toilets at the nearby Morrison’s supermarket. Note for beginners If you’re struggling to see birds through your binoculars, you’ll learn quickly how to use them with speed and accuracy and discover some useful techniques for watching birds in the field. You’ll also learn how to identify birds by their songs and calls.Please don’t buy binoculars especially for the trip as these can be provided on request. You’ll be able to get advice about binoculars, what to buy and the best places to make a purchase. What to wear Spring evenings can be cold. Bring plenty of layers with you. Please don’t wear jeans as they will wick moisture from low growing vegetation. Bring a waterproof coat, over-trousers and sturdy, waterproof boots, scarf, gloves, hat and you also may need sun screen and insect repellent.
