After optional breakfast from 09:00, we’ll explore this small lake and adjoining farmland between St Aidan’s and Fairburn Ings. Birdwatching starts at 10:00. We’ll look for yellowhammer, tree sparrow, reed bunting and water birds on the lake and River Aire and listen for the elusive cuckoo. Contact me for breakfast arrangements. Price £15 per person including a fully guided session, travel, refreshments and a list of birds seen and heard on the day. Transport available Meet me at 08:00 at the Moor Allerton Centre on the Leeds outer ring road if you’d like transport to the venue. What to expect Easy walking on flat ground. Most paths are well made but it may be muddy. There are no hides. Facilities are available at the cafe or at RSPB St Aidans, a short drive away. Refreshments are available at the end of the walk. Time advertised is the start and end of the walk at the venue. Note for beginners If you’re struggling to see birds through your binoculars, you’ll learn quickly how to use them with speed and accuracy and discover some useful techniques for watching birds in the field. You’ll also learn how to identify birds by their songs and calls.Please don’t buy binoculars especially for the trip as these can be provided on request. You’ll be able to get advice about binoculars, what to buy and the best places to make a purchase. What to wear Bring plenty of layers in case of chilly weather. Please don’t wear jeans as they will wick moisture from low growing vegetation. Bring a waterproof coat, over-trousers and sturdy, waterproof boots. Scarf, gloves and hat are essential and it’s a good idea to carry spare socks and gloves.
