Bird song is the subject of my Wednesday morning sessions at Rodley Nature Reserve. Each week you’ll be able to improve your bird song identification, learn how and why birds sing and find out about all the birds that visit the reserve. We’ll focus on 16 resident species over the winter months so that you have a good basic knowledge before the spring migrants arrive. Price £15 per person with discount for block bookings. Transport For this trip we meet at the nature reserve visitor centre at 09:00. What to expect Most of the sessions will take place in the classroom over the winter months with short listening sessions outdoors if the weather is favourable. The reserve is on flat ground but paths could be muddy in places. Cafe and toilets are available at the reserve. Note for beginners If you’re struggling to see birds through your binoculars, you’ll learn quickly how to use them with speed and accuracy and discover some useful techniques for watching birds in the field. You’ll also learn how to identify birds by their songs and calls. Please don’t buy binoculars especially for the class as these can be provided on request. You’ll be able to get advice about binoculars, what to buy and the best places to make a purchase. What to wear Wear plenty of layers to keep out the chill including thermal base layers. Please don’t wear jeans as they will wick moisture from low growing vegetation. Bring a waterproof coat, over-trousers and sturdy, waterproof boots, scarf, gloves and a hat. It’s advisable to bring spare gloves and socks.
