In the midst of industry and contemporary art nestles the wonderful wildlife haven of Teesside and RSPB Saltholme. While we search the pools, mudflats and scrubland for wildfowl, waders and passerines we’ll also be able to enjoy distant views of Anish Kapoor’s art installation, Temenos, from a variety of angles. With luck we may be able to witness a large starling murmuration as dusk falls. Price £65 per person (plus entrance fee for non-members) including a fully guided session, transport, refreshments and a list of birds seen and heard on the day. Packed lunch required. Please bring your RSPB membership cards if you have them. Transport Transport is available leaving at 08:00 from the Moor Allerton Centre on the Leeds outer ring road. What to expect Easy walking to lots of hides on made up paths but some paths may be muddy. Toilets and cafe are available at the well equipped visitor centre at Saltholme. Start time is from Leeds and end time is the end of the birdwatching walk. Note for beginners If you’re struggling to see birds through your binoculars, you’ll learn quickly how to use them with speed and accuracy and discover some useful techniques for watching birds in the field. You’ll also learn how to identify birds by their songs and calls. Please don’t buy binoculars especially for the trip as these can be provided on request. You’ll be able to get advice about binoculars, what to buy and the best places to make a purchase. What to wear Wear plenty of layers on your body and legs to ensure you stay comfortable throughout the day. Please don’t wear jeans as they will wick moisture from low growing vegetation. Bring a waterproof coat, over-trousers and sturdy, waterproof boots. Scarf, gloves, hat and sunscreen may be needed and it’s a good idea to carry spare gloves. Join me on more trips and learn about each bird’s story whether it migrates or stays in the UK the time of year when it can be seen the types of habitats preferred by different species how birds adapt to their environment.
