Skelton Woods is a little stretch of woods in Whitkirk adjacent to Skeltons Lane. We’ll be aiming to see woodland species such as great spotted woodpecker, nuthatch and treecreeper and scanning the farmland close by for yellowhammer and tree sparrow. Learn resident birdsong and listen out for the first singing migrant of the season, the chiffchaff. Price £15 per person including refreshments. Transport Meet at 08:15 outside Argos/Habitat at the Moor Allerton Centre on the Leeds outer ring road if you’d like a lift. What to expect Easy walking on made up paths. Be prepared for muddy ground. Note for beginners If you’re struggling to see birds through your binoculars, you’ll learn quickly how to use them with speed and accuracy and discover some useful techniques for watching birds in the field. You’ll also learn how to identify birds by their songs and calls.Please don’t buy binoculars especially for the trip as these can be provided on request. You’ll be able to get advice about binoculars, what to buy and the best places to make a purchase. What to wear Wear plenty of layers and waterproof outer clothing including over-trousers and sturdy boots. No jeans please as they will wick moisture from low growing vegetation. Scarf, gloves and hat will be needed and it’s a good idea to carry spare socks and gloves.
