Discover the wonderful heathland of Skipwith Common in the Lower Derwent Valley south of York. Target birds for the day will be woodlark, green woodpecker, tree sparrow and little owl. Price £35 per person including a 4 hour guided session, close-up views through a high powered telescope, a bird list and free refreshments (packed lunch required) Transport available Meet me at 08:00 at the Moor Allerton Centre on the Leeds outer ring road if you’d like transport to the venue. Alternatively, meet at the Bank Island car park just outside Weldrake What to expect Easy walking on flat ground but paths will be muddy in places. Plenty of ‘natural’ toilet break opportunities and facilities at nearby York Designer Outlet. Note for beginners If you’re struggling to see birds through your binoculars, you’ll learn quickly how to use them with speed and accuracy and discover some useful techniques for watching birds in the field. You’ll also learn how to identify birds by their songs and calls.Please don’t buy binoculars especially for the trip as these can be provided on request. You’ll be able to get advice about binoculars, what to buy and the best places to make a purchase. What to wear Bring layers, a waterproof coat, over-trousers and sturdy, waterproof boots. No jeans please. You will need plenty of water, sunscreen and insect repellent.
