Spring is a wonderful time to visit this special Yorkshire Wildlife Trust reserve. Listen for the songs of resident birds marsh tit, willow tit, yellowhammer and reed bunting and learn spring songs from chiffchaff, willow warbler and blackcap. We’ll look for little ringed plover on the lagoons and see if we can find any dragonflies, butterflies and orchids. Price £25 per person including refreshments. What to expect Easy walking on flat ground but paths can be muddy in places. There are a couple of hides at the nature reserve. Toilets are available at nearby Boroughbridge and there are plenty of places for a ‘natural’ toilet break. Note for beginners If you’re struggling to see birds through your binoculars, you’ll learn quickly how to use them with speed and accuracy and discover some useful techniques for watching birds in the field. You’ll also learn how to identify birds by their songs and calls.Please don’t buy binoculars especially for the trip as these can be provided on request. You’ll be able to get advice about binoculars, what to buy and the best places to make a purchase. What to wear Bring layers in case of bad weather and waterproof outer clothing including coat, over-trousers and sturdy waterproof boots. Please don’t wear jeans as they will wick moisture from low growing vegetation. Bring a scarf and gloves for bad weather as well as water, sunscreen and insect repellent.
