This week’s Friday birdwatching will take us to Woodlesford Lock. After an optional breakfast from 9am we’ll visit a variety of habitats including river, canal, woodland and surrounding scrub. Our target birds will be goosander, goldeneye, buzzard, kingfisher and winter thrushes. We’ll also listen for early songsters such as robin and wren and focus on some flock calls. Price £15 including full tuition and refreshments after the walk. Transport Transport is available at 08:00 from the Moor Allerton Centre on the Leeds outer ring road. What to expect Flat canal paths and some uneven ground. Could be muddy. Only ‘natural’ facilities available.Toilets can be found at Sainsbury’s supermarket in nearby Colton or at cafes in Woodlesford. Note for beginners If you’re struggling to see birds through your binoculars, you’ll learn quickly how to use them with speed and accuracy and discover some useful techniques for watching birds in the field. You’ll also learn how to identify birds by their songs and calls.Please don’t buy binoculars especially for the trip as these can be provided on request. You’ll be able to get advice about binoculars, what to buy and the best places to make a purchase. What to wear Wear plenty of layers to keep out the cold weather. Please don’t wear jeans as they will wick moisture from low growing vegetation. Bring a waterproof coat, over-trousers and sturdy, waterproof boots. You’ll also need a scarf, gloves, hat and spare gloves in case of wet weather.
