Bird song at Woodlesford Lock

The varied habitats at Woodlesford Lock give us the opportunity to look for birds on the river, canal, woodland and surrounding scrub. Look for common tern, kingfisher, goosander, sand martin and common sandpiper and listen for sedge warbler, blackcap, whitethroat, willow warbler and chiffchaff.

Transport

Transport is available at 18:00 from the Moor Allerton Centre on the Leeds outer ring road.

What to expect

Flat canal paths and some uneven ground. Could be muddy. Only ‘natural’ facilities available.Toilets can be found at Sainsbury’s supermarket in nearby Colton.

Note for beginners

If you’re struggling to see birds through your binoculars, you’ll learn quickly how to use them with speed and accuracy and discover some useful techniques for watching birds in the field. You’ll also learn how to identify birds by their songs and calls.Please don’t buy binoculars especially for the trip as these can be provided on request. You’ll be able to get advice about binoculars, what to buy and the best places to make a purchase.

What to wear

Bring plenty of layers in case of cold weather. Please don’t wear jeans as they will wick moisture from low growing vegetation. Bring a waterproof coat, over-trousers and sturdy, waterproof boots. You may also need a scarf, gloves, hat, sun screen and insect repellent.
