The varied habitats at Woodlesford Lock give us the opportunity to look for birds on the river, canal, woodland and surrounding scrub as we walk to Skelton Lake. This is the first time Start Birding has combined the two venues, only possible since the construction of a new bridge earlier in the year. Our target birds will be goosander, goldeneye, buzzard, kingfisher and winter thrushes. We’ll also listen for early songsters such as robin and wren and focus on some flock calls. Note for beginners If you’re struggling to see birds through your binoculars, you’ll learn quickly how to use them with speed and accuracy and discover some useful techniques for watching birds in the field. You’ll also learn how to identify birds by their songs and calls.Please don’t buy binoculars especially for the trip as these can be provided on request. You’ll be able to get advice about binoculars, what to buy and the best places to make a purchase. What to wear Wear plenty of layers to keep out the cold weather. Please don’t wear jeans as they will wick moisture from low growing vegetation. Bring a waterproof coat, over-trousers and sturdy, waterproof boots. You’ll also need a scarf, gloves, hat and spare gloves in case of wet weather.
